We received this question and decided the answer would certainly be useful for Real Estate professionals and their clients!
This is what a survey post looks like
This is a modern survey post. It is about three feet long and it features a permit stamp used to identify the survey corporation that placed the post. Surveyors have used a variety of posts in the Calgary region over the last 100 years, but residential communities in Calgary will most likely have something similar.
Survey posts can be found near the surface, above ground level, or countersunk. It is our job to find these markers and use them to determine the boundaries of the parcel. It is not uncommon for these posts to be disturbed, bent, or mangled by heavy equipment which is part of what makes this profession so interesting.
As always, if you find yourself on a property with a question for a surveyor, please do not hesitate to call! More information about survey markers can be found here: https://www.alsa.ab.ca/Surveys-in-Alberta/Boundary-Markers
